JASON URBAN
and LESLIE MUTCHLER (JULMstudios) have been working collaboratively since 2012; they live and work in Brooklyn, New York. Their multidisciplinary work is grounded in research about a variety of intertwined topics: mysticism, animism, geology, material dichotomies between people and nature, and color phenomenology. Their work incorporates technology and various digital aesthetics, but their practice is rooted in craft and handskill.

JULMstudios’ recent work has focused on the physical vocabulary of talisman—the way an object can be embedded with the power to mediate between people and the unpredictable landscape. These works in a variety of media are informed by ongoing comparative research that has taken them from the megaliths of England and Ireland to the Shinto shrines of Japan and more. Closer to home in the US, they have focused on Pennsylvania Dutch hex and fraktur history as well as the mysticism of color at the Faber Birren Color Collection at Yale University.

The pair has had solo exhibitions at Eastern Edge (St. Johns, Canada), Center for Book Arts (New York, NY), Monaco (St. Louis, MO), the Delaware Contemporary (Wilmington, DE), NARS Foundation (Brooklyn, NY), Grizzly Grizzly (Philadelphia, PA), The Print Center (Philadelphia, PA), Centre for Fine Print Research (Bristol, UK), Space Gallery (Portland, ME), Atelier Circulaire (Montreal, Canada), among others. They have been awarded numerous residencies including SaikoNeon in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan, Edition/Basel in Basel, Switzerland, Cork Printmakers International Visiting Artist Residency in Cork, Ireland and Dieu Donne Workspace Residency in Brooklyn. Both are affiliated with Pratt Institute where Mutchler is Chair of the Foundation Program and Urban teaches in the Communication Design program.

Urban holds a BFA from Kutztown University (Kutztown, PA) and an MFA from the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA). Mutchler holds a BFA from Kent State University (Kent, OH) and an MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University (Philadelphia, PA).
