From folklore and superstition to organized religion and spirituality, magic’s divine power can often be harnessed through the use of rock and minerals- such as crystals, hag stones, or pi stones. This elevated use of material stands in stark contrast to Western culture’s history of exploitation and extraction of natural resources, many of which are mined to power our digital devices. 
For Fraktur Fire &#38;amp; Elemental Inventories, the artists have created a series of talismans for our precarious times from handmade neon-pigmented abaca paper, collaged digital prints, and blackletter hex devotions. Speculative geo-forms are grouped in UV printed organic grids akin to natural coral structures or virtual gaming inventories, organizing combinations of charged rocks and minerals to create hopeful intentions and actions. To accompany the paperworks and prints, speculative rocks and minerals have been hand-carved from reclaimed foam and UV printed with colorful textures as highly stylized plastistones arranged into several magical divining grids.

Magic is the process of making hope. Something from something. Something of word, something of thing. Art is alchemy. Through assembling interests, processes, material, and knowledge artists can create meaning. Collaborative practices bring in more threads of obsession and method, weaving them together with deft attention to detail, making something complex and strong and often strange. Something from something. Even when not engaging with magic as subject or process, art is a form of magic, the studio a site of ritual. Process, a spell.

Read them aloud, and once more under your breath.&#38;nbsp; 

Move the air, displace it as you speak.

Breathe in this place.

 A collection can be assembled, a collection can be also made. Objects that mirror objects. Yes, real fakes. The systems create and they link, amplify power, tell stories, let us glimpse the secret life of the thing.&#38;nbsp; Keep them in place, just so.
Ordered. Arranged.
When artists set out to create magical objects and incantations, the result is magic on magic. It’s louder, brighter.&#38;nbsp; Jason Urban and Leslie Mutchler offer this, using the visual language of a natural history museum, an archive. They offer access to their shifting inventory of talismanic objects and spells, purpose-made for today. We need this kind of magic.
The life cycle of things? Magic. Being together? Magic. Making sense of the world? Magic. What is magic other than putting objects, ideas, situations together, remaking the world; one gesture at a time?

Contemplating the rare earth minerals that generate the “magic” of our smartphones, Speculative Geologies is a collection of more than 350 virtual rocks and minerals associated with the attributes and actions of our digital devices. “Speculative Geologies calls focus to the rapid planetary metamorphoses that science, art, and the geologic imagination have set underway—largely without intention—in the digital Anthropocene.”*

(your) future talisman, installed at Neon Heater, organizes Speculative Geologies’ rocks and minerals, now physically manufactured as highly stylized plastistones, into several powerful divining grids. Each talisman is arranged to harness specific powers to guide, protect or empower the user.

For most of us, the wild and the wilderness it occupies is a distant concept- a thing of legend and memory. We navigate a regulated world of rules and deadlines and few aspects of our lives contain even a hint of the wild. But perhaps art is a place that remains wild? People need spaces to express themselves and experiment, places to share new ideas and embrace the unknown. Inspired by the exploratory quality of nature and art, MAKEwild is an artwork, an environment, and an activity that provides museum-goers time and space to discuss, reflect, and ultimately, make. An open studio space built for the Blanton Museum of Art, MAKEwild presents museum-goers of all ages with an opportunity to be a little wild through hands-on creation. 
We conceived of MAKEwild as a participatory installation- an active site for creative inquiry, communication, and collaboration. The stations facilitate&#38;nbsp; face-to-face making through open-ended project prompts and limited, curated materials that invite participants to explore what it means to make in serendipitous and wild ways.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Weaving in many cultures is a sacred art, a type of magic, a spidery kind of skill. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

For thousands of years, people have sought to connect with the earth through plants - living matter that nourishes, strengthens, beautifies, cleanses, teaches, holds, and enlightens us. Plants possess a type of magic and are seen by many cultures as having symbolic meaning and power: palms are a symbol of eternal life, eucalyptus a symbol of protection, and grasses a symbol of generosity.
A Wild Mesh is a collection of recent works meditating on the magic of the natural world by fusing handmade paper with dried plant matter and risograph prints. The work is a reflection on the entangled and beautiful relationship between manmade structures and the natural world.
Referencing Hyperobjects, Timothy Morton’s 2013 call to arms on global warming and the climate crisis, the artists attempt to blur background and foreground by weaving various grasses and plant matter through large-scale, handmade fluorescent abaca sheets. These humble, often invisible flora, some of which are sourced from the nearby Mercer Meadows, are enmeshed directly with the handmade and serve as a reminder of the environmental cost of our endless material consumption.
The taxonomic names of plants, minerals, and organic matter used and manipulated in the making of the work are broken down into simple syllabic form and wrap around the gallery, anchoring the work to the space, the ground, and the real. The text reads like poetry, open and searching within the space.
The plant and mineral works can be seen as woven talismans for the insistent perseverance of life through both their simulated and physical realness. The addition of UV lighting activates the fluorescence found embedded within the handmade abaca sheets, heightening our senses to the physical and calling attention to the magic within.

Speculative Geologies installed at Eastern Edge, St. Johns, Newfoundland &#38;amp; Labrador, Canada, 2023. 
Speculative Geologies, a project by collaborators Jason Urban and Leslie Mutchler, brings together their interests in mysticism, animism, geology, color phenomenology, and material dichotomies between technology and nature. Contemplating the rare earth minerals that generate the “magic” of our smartphones, each specimen in Speculative Geologies is associated with a hypothetical attribute or action of our digital devices. Bringing together the banal, a rock or mineral that counts your steps, and the momentous, a rock or mineral that remembers the old mythology, each rock/mineral form is associated with an imagined function.
From folklore and superstition to organized religion and spirituality, magic’s divine power is often harnessed through the use of geological matter- crystals, hag stones, pi stones, and chumpi-khuyas to name a few. This revered role of material stands in stark contrast to Western culture’s history of exploitation and extraction of natural resources. With this relationship of physical to metaphysical in mind, Speculative Geologies postulates new forms perhaps uncompromised by the past and by preconceived notions. Using 3D modeling, Urban and Mutchler present a catalog of colorful, imagined rocks and minerals that ponders the Wild, the Virtual, and the Unthought.

Consisting of six 11x17” risograph prints mounted on a custom-made clipboard, Speculative Geologies: Future Rock + Mineral Studies features 138 individual proposals for geological matter. From folklore

Unthought. As we continue to build this archive, we are excited to have

Somewhere, an artists book inspired by midcentury books about light that often used black and white photographs to illustrate concepts about color, is part of a larger exploration of the facts and fictions of color. The book is a poetic and metaphoric meditation on failed communication about color.

A rainbow is a phenomenon, both brilliant and banal, caused by the reflection, refraction and dispersion of light through water resulting in a multicolored circular arc. Somewhere is a collection of black and white images of rainbows. Incomplete arcs, the color drained, the voices stunted, our search for the rainbow bridge continues.

A 400-page, 8x10” smyth sewn hardcover book with foil embossed covers, Somewhere is printed in an edition of four and signed and numbered on the colophon page. Spreads feature a looping series of black and white images of rainbows rendered in CMYK (scanned from risographs). A prototype version of the book was used in the video, Somewhere, which was featured in Impracticum: Mining Books on Color, Urban and Mutchler’s 2021 Center for Book Arts (NYC, NY) exhibition, and its accompanying web project, http://colorimpracticum.space. 

The project was printed and bound by Conveyor Studio in Elmwood Park, NJ.Copies of Somewhere are available for viewing at The
 Birren Collection at Yale 
University, the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt Design Library, and the 
University of California San Diego Art Library.

Circles in Circles (32 Variations), Flour, Salt, Pigment, &#38;amp; String, Each approximately 48", 2020.
Circles in Circles are a series of more than three dozen handmade beadworks. The necklaces, each with a unique color story consisting of an arrangement of 108 beads, contain a variety of type and quantity of color allowing for relational color contrasts to emerge. We see these as tools as well as artifacts. They are the result of a long pandemic year where our kitchen was also our studio.
 
At the beginning of 2020 we were awarded a year-long Workspace Residency at Dieu Donne papermaking studio but instead found ourselves trapped in our apartment during the NYC lockdown. We took the high quality suspension pigments we acquired for papermaking and pivoted. Leslie recalled time as a child when her mother made salt dough to occupy her at the kitchen table. Could humble, everyday materials- salt, flour, oil, pigment- substitute for a professional studio experience? We consider the beads a kind of analog wellness app to occupy our hands and distract our minds during those long months stuck inside. The beaded forms might be seen as necklaces or rosaries or japamala.

Geochromatic Studies / Out of Gamut installed at Monaco in St. Louis, MO, 2021. [Photo credits: David Johnson]For their exhibition at Monaco, Urban and Mutchler compose a group of 
works that consider digital and analog gamuts and imagine a 
transitional&#38;nbsp; space between them. Inspired by the quack color science of
 the late nineteenth century, Geochromatic Studies / Out of Gamut meditates on color’s ability to straddle spaces- both real and imagined- and transport us to alternate dimensions. The exhibition is anchored by a central printed image, Out of Gamut (Dark Rainbow).
 A large, digitally-printed grid that spans the wall and floor and 
engages with objects and images both in and out of the color space. Two 
planar works, Modified Boulders Rock Mold and Boulders Rock Mold Inverso operate as liminal panels&#38;nbsp; alternating between the real and the 
imagined, the possible and the actual. Another freestanding grid appears
 as a three-dimensional support structure in Circles in Circles in Squares (Color Meditations),
 a sculptural work made of over thirty beaded meditation necklaces the 
artists produced in their kitchen during the 2020 pandemic lockdown. The
 necklaces, made with humble materials- salt, flour, oil, and pigment- 
are a kind of analog color picker and tactile alternative to doom 
scrolling. Woven through a metal wire grid, the piece leans against the 
wall like a composite figure, tired, but sturdy- in and out of color.
